KYC Document Automation for Banks
Onboarding speed and compliance evidence usually pull in opposite directions. Document automation is where the tension is resolved.

The onboarding bottleneck
A retail or corporate onboarding pack can contain identity documents, proof of address, income evidence, board resolutions, trade licences and signature specimens — collected across branches, apps and email, in varying quality and more than one language and script.
What gets automated
Document automation in KYC generally covers:
- Classifying each item in the onboarding pack and detecting what is missing
- Extracting identity fields from national IDs, passports and residence documents
- Checking expiry dates, document integrity signals and data consistency across documents
- Reconciling the name, date of birth and address stated on the application against the evidence
- Passing structured data to screening, risk scoring and core banking systems
- Producing an audit trail of what was read, what was checked and who approved it
Designing for regulators, not just speed
Every automated decision in an onboarding file should be reconstructable: the source document, the extracted value, the confidence, the rule applied, the exception raised and the reviewer who cleared it. Where a regulator expects human accountability, the workflow should require it explicitly rather than rely on a silent auto-approval threshold.
